One of the most common questions I get from my fans regards how to grow a beard. Beards are in! And news flash, they’ve been „in“ since before „in“ meant cool.
With the rise of social media and ability to start trends overnight, it seems as though the beard culture just popped up out of nowhere, but I beg to differ.
The bearded have been around for centuries. And what once was an icon of strength and power, continues symbolize manliness.
Here I will give you my methods on how to grow a beard and how long it will take. And while you’re waiting for those gnarly hairs to sprout, you might get a kick out of these beard facts.
How to Grow a Beard
If you’re serious about being furred please take note, there’s a right way and a wrong way to grow your beard. You want to keep it well groomed and clean. The more you groom it as it is growing, the better shape it will have. Notice I say groom not cut. Which leads me to my first tip:
To Grow a Beard You Have to Let it Grow!
Seems like the obvious tip right? But you’d be surprised how many people think that a lot of shaving will get a thicker, fuller beard. Your beard actually has a lot to do with your genetics. For many, it will grow in patchy. That’s about the time when a man gives up and thinks he just can’t grow a beard. But stick it out. You might look like a hot mess for a minute, but those furs will fill in over time.
A Good Diet to Aid in the Struggle to Grow Your Beard
Like hair and nails, your beard needs nutrients to grow fast and strong. A diet rich in protein, biotin and vitamin E will help you grow your fur faster and stronger. If you don’t already get a good amount of veggies and proteins, you may be lacking. These are inexpensive supplements and can be purchased at most grocery stores. Also, remember to hydrate and get plenty of rest. Your beard needs its beauty sleep!
Keep it Clean
If you don’t keep your scruff clean you’ll find yourself stunting the growth of your manly mane or worse, with ingrown hairs. Keep dead skin and dirt out of your hair follicles by scrubbing in the morning and at night.
Get in a Good Face Massage
That’s right, give your face a good rub. Who knows, maybe you’ll think of something epic while you’re doing it! Massaging your skin stimulates the hair follicles to grow. 10-15 two times a day is a good starting point.
The Beard Stages
You’re going to see a few different stages as you grow out your beard. There’s the first itchy stage. This is likely the time where your partner will want you to pretty much just stay away from their face…and stuff.
After this you’ll start to notice a much softer beard start to take shape. This is the point where you want to start shaping it to the way you want it to grow. Here’s a great chart on beard shapes and styles:
After you’ve shaped and grown out your beard to where you want it, it’s a matter of maintaining it. You’ll want to take good care to clean it, oil it and comb it.
Maintaining your Beard
There are loads of beard oil companies out there claiming to be the best of the best. In my opinion, you just have to find the product that suits you. You want to have a good beard oil to condition and protect your furs as well as a good smelling beard.
You’ll also want to establish a good rapport with a barber. Remember the bearded experience is not just about the result, it’s about the journey. Find yourself a regular barber and you’ll soon be feeling right at home in that chair.
Beards aren’t for everyone, but they are epic. You never know, sprouting that man fur might just give you that extra boost you need to conquer the world.
